CHAPTER 13

After she left Dale’s apartment, for the first time, Jane began to feel like she was starting to get somewhere. She was establishing who had been there that evening and if they’d noticed anyone, although she did find it strange that no one else had mentioned this Richard Blotner guy.

Had Dale been the only one to feel like the guy was shifty or had everyone avoided him so much that he didn’t even warrant a mention? More than likely, he hadn’t been mentioned because the ladies usually kept to themselves. She knew how they operated, and she wouldn’t have been surprised to find that they’d pretty much ignored a newcomer. Maybe that was the reason no one mentioned him.

On her drive home, Jane realized she’d been so busy with the investigation that she hadn’t even thought about her parent's offer of moving into her grandparent's old house. There had been so many other things going on that she’d meant to think about it later, but later had never come. At least, until now.

She hadn’t mentioned it when they were at her parent’s home, but she’d considered trying to buy it from them a long time ago. The property was filled with fond memories of when she was growing up, and she’d always wanted something similar for her children.

Her grandparents had passed when she was pregnant with Libby, so she’d never gotten to experience the farm. Tyson had been out there a few times, but he’d been a lot smaller then and had been at the age where he clung to his mother like a lifeline.

She’d talked to Evan about buying the house, but he had flat out refused. All he’d seen was an old house and a longer commute to work. Her heart had broken that he hadn’t even given it a moment’s thought, but at the time she’d done her best to forget about it. She never had, though.

“Maybe I should see what the kids think,” Jane said to herself. They’d seemed interested when they’d been with their grandma and grandpa, but had that been for show? Maybe tonight she’d ask them what they thought while they were having dinner. She’d always hated it when Evan would make decisions without her input, so she should probably include them.

Now that she had a little extra money in her pocket, she decided to take a detour to the grocery store. She’d pick up what she needed to make one of their favorite meals in the hope that it would make them more willing to talk and, fingers crossed, would be willing to consider the move. If she didn’t have to worry about the rent each month, that would be a tremendous burden lifted from her shoulders. One that could make a huge difference in their lives over time.

As she clicked on her turn signal and began to exit the interstate, she wondered which meal she should make for the kids. They each had their own favorites, but she wanted to find something that they both loved.
